The Need For Daily Bread

Trusting God One Day At A Time


In Psalms 8:4, David asks the Lord a question that often runs through my mind: “What is man that you are mindful of him..” 


I think about that question a lot because when you consider the greatness and holiness of God, it doesn’t take long to see that we pale in comparison. Exodus 34 gives a breakdown of His character and when you set it up side by side with ours, all you can see are the ways we miss the mark. One notorious thing about humans is that we have a propensity to forget things we ought not to. We tend to forget all the things the Lord has done and continues to do. We tend to forget His unchanging and faithful nature. We tend to forget that it is in Him, we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). 


In the church, there is often hostility towards the children of Israel without recognizing that they are an archetype of our own rebellion against  God. At a surface level, the hostility may seem justified. They saw Yahweh bring down 10 plagues to deliver them from 400 years of oppressions. They walked on dry ground when He parted the Red Sea. He led them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. For 40 years, He provided them with manna from Heaven to eat each day. Yet every time they were slightly inconvenienced or afraid, they grumbled and complained about Yahweh and His servant, Moses. 


Thus, reading through Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy (and frankly, the rest of the Old Testament) can be incredibly frustrating.
