REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Memory Verse: “(32) Remember Lot’s wife. (33) Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.”

– Luke 17:32-33 NKJV

Drivers Ed 101:

Who knows how to drive? Who taught you and what was one lesson you learned?

  • When learning to drive I was constantly told to watch my front because the car and I are moving forward, therefore, I— too— must look forward. Very true!

Our Mirrors: Helpful or Harmful?

What purpose do our mirrors then serve? Are they helpful or harmful?

  • Helpful: Mirrors enable us/me to see the things occurring on our left, right, and back-side. They help us to remain vigilant and they bring attention to see our blind spot, which is also known as the area we can’t naturally see as we move forward.

  • Harmful: However, our mirrors can become distracting if we stare at them for too long. They pull us away from the big picture or the road in front of us. If we spend too long staring into our RARE view mirror, or even looking back, we can end up in a costly accident.

So, Let’s Talk About This Concept Of Looking Back!

Let's read Genesis 19:1-26 NKJV (Sodom and Gomorrah & Lot’s Family) together!

  • What are some interesting observations in this passage? *Open Discussion*

In this reading, who were some people that did not like the idea of leaving?

  • Verse 5: These were men who were seeking to do all kinds of unholy/ ungodly/ unspeakable things in Lot’s home. These men are the wild drivers on the road. They get into all kinds of mischief that ends up costing them lives/souls.

  • Verse 14: Lot warns his sons-in-law and they think he’s joking! These men were stuck looking at their side-view mirrors instead of the larger view!

  • Verse 15: When the morning dawned, the angel urged Lot to hurry. Why in the world did the angels have to hurry Lot? Lot, too, was hesitant! Why wait? He was too busy looking at his front mirror, side mirror, back mirror to truly see that Sodom and Gomorrah were about to go up in flames! Maybe he thought of his property. After all, he chose this side of town after leaving Abraham's side.

  • But in verse 16: “And while he lingered”, why in the world would he linger? Is your estate worth more than your life? Are the mundane things that you’ve built worth more than your own life and that of your family?

HOLD ON! PAUSE! WAIT! BE STILL! UM...

If you and I heard that the "PURGE" was going to occur by tomorrow afternoon at 5pm, would you wait until tomorrow morning before you leave the city?

LOL. Think about it brethren. Just think about it!

UNLIKE Lots’ Wife.......

**COUGH. SUBS. COUGH**

Question!

What really happened to Lot’s wife? What was she thinking? Why did she look back?

  • Verse 24-26: Lot and his family got in the car—Lot’s wife is driving—and as they go, the Lord began to rain brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. As the Lord begins to overthrow the city and EVERYONE in it, Lot’s wife decides to turn her body back and take a look.

Question!

  • Weren’t the instructions clear when God spoke to Lot & his family in Genesis 19:17? “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed”. Nevertheless, she turned back and turned to stone. May we not turn into stone or do ourselves more harm than good.

WHAT POWERFUL LESSONS CAN WE LEARN & FROM WHO?

THE MEN OF THE CITY

  • There are consequences when you continue in sin, refuse to listen, and forsake the Lord, according to Isaiah 1:28 NKJV. So, let us not continue in sin thinking that grace will abound—because the bible says "Certainly NOT"!

LOT’S SONS-IN-LAW

  • There are consequences when you don’t take God seriously, think he’s joking, or aren’t in tune with Him, according to Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV. So, let us not lean on our own understanding, but acknowledge Him and His infinite wisdom so that He can direct our path!

LOT

  • In my opinion, Lot stayed in Sodom and Gomorrah for far/way too long! How many signs of evil/wickedness/danger do you need before you get up from sitting in the seat of the scornful (Psalms 1:1)?

  • However, I do believe that Lot took the Jesus-approach in trying to rescue his sons-in-law before the end of Sodom and Gomorrah. So, let's just say that all things work together for those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

LOT’S WIFE

  • There are consequences when you hold on too tightly to things because you can end up losing your life, according to our memory verse, Luke 17:33 NKJV.

  • There are consequences when we choose to disobey the instructions of the Lord, according to Deuteronomy 28:15 NKJV, so let us take heed, be sensitive/ focused individuals if truly we desire to preserve our lives!

CONCLUSION:

How are you looking back?

Are You Reflecting On The Past OR Dwelling On The Past?

  • Now—the truth is that we all look back/think back, but we must ensure that we are not disobeying God if he has instructed us to MOVE FORWARD.

  • Also, we must ensure that we are ONLY reflecting on the past; NOT dwelling on the past as there is a major difference between the two!

To Reflect – To pick up the lessons/teachable moments of the past to help produce a better outcome for the future.

To Dwell – To relive the events and gruesome details of the past, which yields no benefit to the future, yet brings pain and sorrow.

PRAYER POINT:

Now that we know and understanding these things, let’s be intentional and deliberate by choosing to listen to and walk right by Christ; Let’s not lose sight of the race that is ahead of us because of the things going on all around us, in Jesus name, amen!
